JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim believes that Thailand and Cambodia's ongoing diplomatic efforts will be able to withstand the escalation of tensions on the border of the two countries which have been heating up again in recent times.

Anwar said no comprehensive settlement had yet been reached, but continued communications had prevented more serious incidents from occurring.

"Although no complete settlement has yet been reached, ongoing diplomatic efforts have ensured no more serious incidents have occurred," Anwar said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, December 10.

Anwar Ibrahim contacted Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to discuss the development of the situation in the border area.

Anwar appreciated the openness and readiness of the two country leaders to continue dialogue in order to ease tensions and avoid misunderstandings that could worsen conditions.

He emphasized that Malaysia will continue to support the process of resolving peace, dialogue based on international law, and regional cooperation to maintain regional stability.

Tensions between Thai and Cambodian forces have risen again in recent times, fueled by fire incidents and mine explosions at several border points.

The incident sparked accusations and cancellation of part of the ceasefire agreement, as well as increased use of artillery and airstrikes that caused civilian casualties and mass evacuation.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is quite active in mediating tensions between the two neighboring countries, especially with PM Anwar's position as Chair of ASEAN 2025.

In October, Cambodian and Thai leaders signed a peace agreement on the sidelines of the ASEAN 47th Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a commitment of the two countries to reduce tensions.
