China Records 25 New Cases Of COVID-19 Infection, Government Sends Team To Liaoing

JAKARTA - China's health authorities announced the country had 25 new cases of COVID-19 infection in a report last Sunday, up from a day earlier of just 18 cases, on Monday's report.

Cited from CNA on Monday, May 17, China's National Health Commission said five of the new cases were local infections, three in Liaoning Province and two in Anhui Province. Another case is an imported infection originating from abroad.

The total number of new confirmed cases is the highest since the report of 26 new cases of COVID-19 infection reported on April 2.

The number of new asymptomatic cases, which are not classified by China as confirmed cases, dropped to 17 from 19 cases the day before. Thus, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China now stands at 90.872, while the number of deaths remains unchanged at 4.636.

Meanwhile, Chief Epidemiologist at China's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wi Zunyou said a recent spike in sporadic COVID-19 cases in Yingkou Port City, Liaoning Province, as imported cases and local authorities have not determined the source of infection.

Wu made this assessment based on the start time of the case and the latest location in the city, as well as in Lu'an City, Anhui Province, according to the Global Times.

According to him, although the city of Lu'an in East China's Anhui Province reported confirmed cases in advance, the timing of Yingkou cases in Liaoning Province was earlier.

"Usually, it is the import case or item that results in a new case in China. As an inland province, the chances of Anhui's rise due to import cases are low. But Liaoning, the province where Yingkou is located, has reported several domestic outbreaks triggered by import cases", he said.

In this regard, China's National Health Commission has sent a working group to Liaoning Province to guide the work of prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic.
