JAKARTA - The Class IIA Correctional Institution (Lapas) Karanganyar, Nusakambangan, Central Java, assisted in the repatriation of Baihaqi, a prisoner who was carrying out the death penalty for death due to illness.

"Currently, the deceased's family is completing the administrative requirements for applications, identities, and other data," said Head of Karanganyar Prison Riko Purnama Candra in a statement shared by the Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, September 2.

Baihaqi breathed his last at the Cilacap Regional General Hospital (RSUD) on Monday (1/9). Riko expressed his deep condolences for the death of one of the inmates of the Karanganyar Prison.

Although there is no rule of obligation to return the bodies of prisoners to their place of origin, Riko said on the request of the family and humanitarian considerations, his party is trying to return Baihaqi to his home area in Aceh.

"According to Government Regulation Number 32 of 1999 Article 18 paragraph (3), prisons have no obligation to return bodies to their place of origin and if 2x24 hours are not taken by the family, they will be properly buried by the prison according to their religion and belief. However, because of the family's request and humanitarian reasons, the prison is currently in the process of trying to send the deceased's body to the family to the right address," he said.

Riko explained that the Karanganyar Prison had contacted the wife of the deceased who worked in Malaysia to confirm the address of the family home in eastern Aceh.

Baihaqi, explained Riko, was a death row convict in a drug case. At first, Baihaqi complained of shortness of breath, nausea in the stomach, and was treated by prison medical before being referred to Cilacap Hospital.

After medical treatment by the hospital medical, the deceased died of heart disease, Riko said.
