MPR Chair: US Zero Tariff Facilitates Soybean Imports To Spareparts

JAKARTA - MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani assessed that trade negotiations between President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump resulted in an agreement on import rates that benefited Indonesia, especially for a number of strategic needs.

Muzani said Indonesia could access important products from the US, such as soybeans and aircraft parts, at low and even zero rates.

"With that agreement, Indonesia's position is actually very profitable, because we need a number of American products at low or zero rates," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 23.

He said the decline in import rates would have a direct impact on the smooth supply of staple food raw materials such as tempeh and tofu, which had been dependent on soybean imports from the US.

In addition, the ease of access to aircraft parts is expected to accelerate the improvement of the national flight fleet which has been disrupted by the scarcity of components and the high price.

"It is hoped that with this low rate, the scarcity of aircraft spare parts can be overcome even faster because the price is even cheaper at lower rates," he said.

On the other hand, Indonesia's exports to the US such as footwear and textiles are also expected to be more competitive thanks to the reduction in tariff barriers.

Muzani emphasized that the results of these negotiations are concrete examples of diplomatic benefits between leaders that have a direct impact on the welfare of the people.
