JAKARTA - Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he did not consider the purchase of US weapons a security risk.

But Kristersson said it would be good for Europe to reduce its dependence on Washington on weapons and other defense equipment.

Arriving at the EU summit in Brussels amid dissent over how to increase the military capabilities of Ukraine and the European Union, Kristersson was asked by reporters whether the purchase of US-produced weapons poses a risk to security.

"No, I absolutely would not say that. We have good experience from cooperation with the US defense industry," he said.

Kristersson also said he believed the European defense industry needed to be stronger.

"Both the Swedish defense industry and many European countries will benefit from slightly reducing their dependence on the US defense industry," he continued.

Europe is currently increasing its main consolidation regarding defense in response to US President Donald Trump's stance on import tariff policies to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Previously, the Head of Foreign Policy of the European Union Kaja Kallas in Brussels asked European country leaders to align words of support for Kyiv with action.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues his efforts to end the war, including through restoring relations with Russia.

This month, Washington had stopped the distribution of intelligence and arms shipments to Ukraine, raising questions about the potential danger if it depended too much on the US system.
