JAKARTA - Students from Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Yogyakarta managed to win a design competition for the 75th anniversary of the celebration of Indonesia's diplomatic relations with Thailand, setting aside hundreds of works from Indonesia and Thailand.

"The logo is contested, (the winner) is from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassy, the Thai Embassy," explained the Director of Southeast Asia, Directorate General of Asia Pacific and Africa of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mirza Nurhidayat during the launch of the celebration logo at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was attended by the Thai Ambassador to Indonesia Prapan Disyat, Thursday 30 January.

Meanwhile, Dicky from the Southeast Asia Directorate said the winner was determined by a number of criteria set and assessed jointly between Indonesia and Thailand.

"Concepts, creativity, overall impact and originality," he explained when asked about the assessment criteria.

He further explained that a total of 635 works from Indonesia and Thailand were received by the committee. Of that number, 502 works passed the initial stage of verification, consisting of 56 works from Thailand and 446 from Indonesia.

After that, selected for the top 20 design works, before then filtered again to the top 5 and finally determined 3 winners.

"Juara 1 and 3 from Indonesia, won 2nd place from Thailand. The judges are from Indonesia and Thailand with a scoring system," he said.

Meanwhile, Faiz, a student of the Department of Development Geography, the Faculty of Geography of UGM who came out as the winner, said that the consideration in making the logo this time was the culture of the two countries, with traditional dances becoming the slice of the two countries he chose.

"What is interesting about these two countries is their culture, so I take the most common of the two countries, namely traditional dances," explained the student from Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta.

"Then I thought about how the number 75 formed people who were dancing and there were also representatives from the elements of each country. From Thailand I represented it with an elephant symbol, from Indonesia with a Garuda bird," he explained.

Knowing this competition from social media, Faiz said that he almost did not participate in the competition because he had time. So, he did not expect to come out as a winner.

"The design process is only one day," he said.
