Earthquake 4.9 Magnitude Shakes Bima City, BMKG Urges Residents To Stay Calm

JAKARTA The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected a shallow earthquake rocked Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Wednesday, January 8, early in the morning.

Based on information from the InfoBMKG application monitored in Jakarta, the 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred at 02.58 WITA. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea with a depth of 11 kilometers, at coordinates 8.21 South Latitude (LS) and 119.27 East Longitude (BT).

This earthquake was about 64 kilometers from the northeast of Bima City. The tremors were felt in Bima City with an intensity scale of IV MMI, which means they are strong enough to be felt by many people inside the house and some light objects may be shifted.

Until now, BMKG has not provided detailed reports regarding the causes of the earthquake or the impacts caused on the community. There is no information on whether the earthquake has the potential to trigger a tsunami or not.

BMKG urges the public to remain calm and not be influenced by information that cannot be justified. The public is advised to wait for the results of the official analysis to be released by the BMKG.
