Preventing Yasonna Laoly From Going Abroad, KPK: All Actions Have A Legal Basis

JAKARTA - Spokesperson for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Tesaa Mahardika Sugiarto explained the reason for his side to prevent former Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly from going abroad with the Secretary General of the PDI-P (PDIP) Hasto Kristiyanto.

Yasonna's investigation was criticized by PDIP. The party led by Megawati Soekarnoputri assessed that the KPK's move to prevent Yasonna from having a clear reason. Tessa emphasized that the effort was legal.

"All the actions taken by the investigator have a legal basis. There are procedures before they are submitted and approved by the KPK leadership to take clear precautions," Tessa told reporters, Friday, December 27.

Tessa stressed that all parties prevented from going abroad need their statements domestically in the process of deepening corruption cases.

"So that the process can be faster. The point is like that," said Tessa.

However, Tessa said that she did not have any information on the extent of Yasonna's involvement in the bribery case of Harun Masiku, who is now also dragging Hasto Kristiyanto.

"Yes, it hasn't gotten there yet, it's still being investigated by investigators. All parties, not just those mentioned. Of course we will process all responsible parties according to the applicable legal rules," he replied.

Hasto Kristiyanto was prevented from leaving the country after being named a suspect in the bribery case that dragged Harun Masiku. The KPK also prevented Yasonna, who is also the chairman of the PDIP DPP from leaving the country, related to the case.

"On December 24, 2024, the KPK has issued Decree Number 1757 of 2024 concerning the Prohibition of Traveling Abroad against 2 Indonesian citizens, namely YHL and HK," said KPK spokesman Tessa Mahardika in her statement, Wednesday, December 25.

On December 18, the KPK had examined Yasonna in her capacity as Chair of the PDIP DPP as a witness in the interim replacement bribery (PAW) case Harun Masiku became a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives for the 2019-2024 period.

The prohibition of traveling abroad to Yasonna and Hasto was carried out because their presence in Indonesia was needed in the context of an investigation into alleged corruption.

"This decision applies to 6 months," said Tessa.
