Call For Middle Eastern Peace, Slovenia Urges More Countries To Recognize Palestine

JAKARTA - Slovenia urges more countries to follow in its footsteps to recognize the Palestinian state.

This was conveyed by Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon who called for an end to Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and for peace in the wider Middle East.

Citing France 24, Friday, September 27, Tanja also urged the Israeli government to comply with international law rules and respect the UN Charter by withdrawing from the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Slovenian Foreign Minister's call to the international community follows a high-level informal meeting between UN council members chaired by Slovenia as President of the UN Security Council this month, with secretary generals and representatives of other Arab Leagues.

Of the 193 UN members, 146 countries currently officially recognize the Palestinian state. Slovenia was one of the ones announcing recognition of the Palestinian state in June 2024, after a vote in which 52 of its lawmakers voted in favor and none opposed.

Norway, Spain, and Ireland also recognized the Palestinian state in May 2024.
