JAKARTA - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) is preparing an anti-piracy task force to eradicate digital crime against films that air through online film platform services.

As reported by Antara, Tuesday, March 30, Director of Creative Industry, Film, Television, and Animation of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Syaifullah Agam said that the era of digital streaming, which has become increasingly popular since the COVID-19 pandemic, opens opportunities for piracy in new ways, for example recording manually through certain tools from home.

A new way is used by pirates to distribute films that can only be watched if subscribed specifically through an over-the-top (OTT) service.

"In the pandemic era or the era of digital streaming, piracy is increasingly prevalent. If we pirate in the cinema using an infrared camera, you can see it. Now, for example, I use a 4K or 8K TV, then I use a recording device that is 8K and I just have to put it on the TV, it can be recorded clearly like DVD", said Syaifullah.

Syaifullah said some OTTs use the most advanced technology to prevent piracy. However, over time, pirates will begin to find new ways to steal the work of filmmakers.

Syaifullah gave an example, an OTT uses a security system that cannot be penetrated using an application. The hijackers will also do another way, namely record manually using a camera that is not legible by the technology embedded in the device.

"Many claims that the technology cannot be hijacked. They said that because they have advanced technology, but if the hijacker uses manual tools? There must be more pirates who are smart now", said Syaifullah.

"In the past, YouTube was also not downloadable, now it has a tool so it's impossible to keep it sophisticated", he added.

The anti-piracy task force will not only provide legal action but will also educate the public to appreciate the work of filmmakers.

"That is what we want to try to continue the anti-piracy task force and focus not only on prosecution but also on socialization and education on IPR issues to creative workers and the public", said Syaifullah.
