JAKARTA - At least 14 people died on Sunday evening in several Israeli attacks targeting around Masyaf, a city in Hama Province, Syria, the government news agency reported.

Two regional intelligence sources said a major military research center for the production of chemical weapons located near Misyaf was attacked several times. It is believed it houses a team of Iranian military experts involved in weapons production.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which usually did not comment on a specific report on the attacks in Syria.

"At around 23:20 on Sunday evening, Israeli enemies launched air aggression from northwestern Lebanon, targeting a number of military locations in the central region (Suriah)," a military source told the SANA news agency.

"Our air defense system managed to block the missiles of aggression and shoot down some of them," the source added, without providing further details.

Meanwhile, a local health official quoted by SANA said 43 people were injured, including some critically, as a result of the attack.

Syrian state media also reported the attack caused two fires, which were being extinguished by firefighters.

Since the Hamas attack on October 7 on Israeli civilians and soldiers, Israel has stepped up its attacks on targets of Iranian-backed militias in Syria and also attacked the air defenses of Syrian soldiers and several Syrian troops.
