KPU Gives An Explanation If Empty Box Wins In Pilkada

The General Elections Commission (KPU) plans to consult the DPR regarding the re-scheduling of the 2024 Pilkada if the empty box wins against a single candidate in an area.

"In the near future the KPU will communicate to consult with the legislators, namely the DPR and the government," said KPU Technical Division Chairman Idham Holik, Monday, August 2.

The consultation referred to is related to Article 54D paragraph (3) of Law Number 10 of 2016 concerning the Second Amendment to Law Number 1 of 2015 concerning Stipulation of Government Regulations in Lieu of Law Number 1 of 2014 concerning the Election of Governors, Regents, and Mayors into Laws.

This article regulates that the next election will be repeated in 2029 according to the schedule for the simultaneous regional elections, which is once every 5 years. However, the KPU proposes an alternative to holding the re-cash in 2025. They think the re-cash in 2029 will delay some areas won by empty boxes to have definitive regional heads.

However, Idham said that if the re-cash is carried out according to a schedule of 5 years, then the area will be led by a temporary acting (pj). This refers to the provisions of Article 3 paragraph (1) of Law Number 8 of 2015 concerning Amendments to Law Number 1 of 2015 concerning Stipulation of Government Regulations in Lieu of Law Number 1 of 2014 concerning the Election of Governors, Regents, and Mayors into Laws.

"So during the time waiting for the elections to be held in the next 5 years, the regions will be led by temporary officials," added Idham.

Until now, the KPU has not determined the schedule for his visit to the DPR to consult in dealing with the phenomenon if the empty box wins in the 2024 Pilkada. However, the KPU seeks a consultation meeting to be held in the near future.
