French Left Winged Party Asks Parliament To Sign Support For Emmanuel Macron's Impeachment

JAKARTA - France's left-wing party, France Unbowed, proposed a move to impeach French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, August 31 local time.

This step was taken because Macron rejected the candidacy for Castets from the left-wing coalition as Prime Minister (PM) of France.

"The draft resolution to begin the impeachment process against the President of the Republic, in accordance with Article 68 of the Constitution, has been sent to lawmakers today for joint signing," said Mathilde Panot, leader of the France Unbowed faction in parliament, quoted from X via Antara.

France Unbowed denounced Macron for rejecting the party's choice for prime minister despite the left-wing coalition winning the most seats in parliamentary elections in July.

Based on Article 68, the president can only be dismissed from his position if there is a clear violation of duties that is not in accordance with the implementation of the presidential mandate.

France Unbowed has enough seats to start the procedure, but to pass it requires a majority two-thirds approval in both parliamentary assemblies.

Macron in August met with factions in parliament as well as party leaders in a bid to negotiate a new government after elections resulted in a groupless parliament that won the majority.

The French president ruled out the New Popular Front, a left-wing coalition that acquired 182 of the 577 parliamentary seats, from the talks citing concerns over "institutional stability".
