Jokowi Strictly Condemns Murder Of Hamas Official Ismail Haniyeh

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi strongly criticized the killing of political leader Hamas Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday. Jokowi called that acts of violence to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh committed in the territory of Iran's sovereignty were intolerable. "Yes, it was a violence, an intolerable killing and occurred in the territory of Iran's sovereignty," he stressed when he was found after opening the Indonesian Digital Economics Festival and Creative Works Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday 1 August. Previously, the Hamas group confirmed Ismail Haniyeh died on Wednesday morning as a result of an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran. "The Hamas Islamic resistance movement expresses his condolences for the death of a child of the great Palestinian nation, Ismail Haniyeh," Hamas said in his Telegram social media. According to the organization, Haniyeh was at the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of Masoud Pezeshkian as the new Iranian president on Tuesday. Haniyeh's murder drew widespread criticism from the international community. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the killing of the Hamas leader and described Israel's actions as a coward and dangerous act. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan said Haniyeh's murder was a heinous act to weaken the Palestinian nation's struggle and their noble resistance in the Gaza Strip. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Bogdanov said the incident constituted a completely unacceptable political assassination and would lead to a further escalation of tension. The Qatar Foreign Ministry also called Haniyeh's murder a dangerous escalation and real violation of international and humanitarian law that undermined peace attempts. Nevertheless, the Israel accused of launching attacks that killed Hamas officials still has not made any statement. United States Secretary of America Antony Blinken said that Washington was not aware of or involved in the killing of the Hamas group.

Meanwhile, Iranian national television reporting on Haniyeh's death stated that the investigation into the attack was ongoing. The results and findings of the investigation will also soon be submitted to the public. "I think all, including Indonesia, strongly condemn such violence and killings," he continued.
