JAKARTA - A Canadian citizen attempted to attack a civilian security unit armed with a knife in southern Israel near the Gaza border. The perpetrator was shot dead, Israeli authorities said.

The incident occurred at the entrance of Netiv HaAsara, a city where security has been increased since Hamas-led militants killed about 20 people there in an October 7 attack in southern Israel that sparked the Gaza war.

The Israeli military said the suspect got out of his vehicle and threatened with a knife against members of the community's rapid response team operating in the area.

The quick response team responded with gunfire and managed to paralyze the suspect. No injuries were reported to the security forces," the military said.

A police spokesman said his attacker was a Canadian citizen.

Reuters television footage showed a corpse, which appeared to be a suspected attacker, was taken into an ambulance.
