JAKARTA - China has decided to postpone arms control discussions with the United States (US). The reason is the sale of US defense equipment to Taiwan.
"For some time, the United States has sold weapons to the Taiwanese government despite strong resistance from China and repeated negotiations," said Chinese Foreign Ministry (Kemenlu) spokesman Lin Jian at a press conference on Wednesday, July 17, quoted by Tass.
Lin Jian said there were consequences for the US action against Taiwan.
"China has decided to postpone consultations [regarding arms control and non-proliferation] with the United States," he continued.
He continued, the Chinese side has shown its readiness to maintain communication relevant to the US based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation. However, the US is not in line with what China has maintained.
The diplomat then asked the US to respect China's basic interests and create a huggered condition.
"For the bdialog and consultation between the two countries," he said.
The US is known to be the main arms supplier to Taiwan. According to China's Ministry of Defense, the US has provided Taiwan with military assistance worth more than $70 billion in recent years.
