JAKARTA - The phenomenon of a magnetic storm that has hit the earth in the past week. It is known that the impact of magnetic storms in general can cause disruptions to television networks, communications, navigation systems, and disruptions to satellite operations such as GPS.

However, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) emphasized that the Indonesian people do not need to worry about magnetic disturbances. "People don't need to worry because the phenomenon of the earth's magnetic storm has no impact on Indonesian territory," said Acting Head of the Center for Technical Seismology, Potential Geophysics, and BMKG Time Signs, Setyoajie Prayoedhie, quoted from ANTARA, Friday, July 12 evening.

According to him, this is because the territory of Indonesia is on the equator or equator line so that it will be protected by a strong magnetosphere belt.

In addition, his party also found the status of disturbances due to magnetic storms detected in Indonesia on a small scale, and it can be proven from the results of BMKG observations at four earth magnet observatories in Indonesia in mid-July 5-11, 2024.

Setyoajie explained, during the midway, the highest magnetic activity occurred on July 8, 2024, with the status of a small magnetic storm recorded at the Tondano Observatory.

Magnetic or geomagnetic storms and commonly referred to as solar storms are temporary disturbances caused by the shock waves of the solar wind and or the clouds of magnetic fields interacting with the Earth's magnetic field.

The status of a magnetic storm was recorded at the Earth's magnetic observation observatory at Tondano Manado and Tuntungan Medan (two observatories of Earth's magnetic observations at north latitude) maximum K index value K=6 and maximum index A value of A=33.

Meanwhile, at the Earth's magnetic observation observatory in Serang Banten and Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (two observatories of Earth's magnetic observations at south latitude) the maximum K index value is K=5 and the maximum index A value is A=23.

In other words, the BMKG analysis means that this magnetic storm phenomenon will have a more impact on countries located in the northern and southern hemispheres.
