Typhoon Wind In China Kills 5 People, Dozens Injured

JAKARTA - Five people were killed and nearly 100 people injured when a hurricane aka tornado hit a city in eastern China.

Videos posted on social media showed tornadoes tearing the roofs of houses and overthrowing trees as debris was thrown into the air.

The severe convective weather caused a tornado, said the Donging Regency Emergency Management Bureau, reported by CNN from Xinhua, Saturday, July 6.

The local government has established a command center and carried out emergency response operations.

According to Xinhua, 2,820 houses were damaged by a tornado in Caiyuan, Shangdong province.

Emergency services are currently conducting on-site cleaning.

Although tornadoes do not occur in China as often as they do in the United States, this is not known for sure. The average occurrence is less than 100 hurricanes per year in China, and at least 1,772 people have died from tornadoes in the country in 50 years since 1961, the researchers said.

In April, a tornado hit the southern city of Guangzhou, killing five people and injuring 33 people.

Earlier this month, the Chinese Meteorology Agency released its annual 'Blue Book' regarding the state of climate change in the country.

The report found the country had experienced the hottest year since 1901 and extreme weather and climate events tended to occur more frequently and be severe.

Other regions in the country are also grappling with extreme weather, as drought is severe and temperatures that hit record highs scorched the northern region while heavy rains inundated the southern region.
