Potential 3.5 Meter Waves In South Kalimantan Waters Until July 12, BMKG Asks Fishermen To Be Alert

SOUTH KALIMANTAN - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning for sea waves as high as 3.5 meters in the waters of South Kalimantan (Kalsel) on July 5-12 2024.

South Kalimantan Syamsudin Noor Meteorological Station guard officer Fitma Suryaani said the potential for high sea waves was due to the new moon phase which increased the maximum tide height.

Based on water level data monitoring and tidal predictions, Fitma said, coastal flooding (rob) has the potential to be on the coast of the South Kalimantan region.

"The coastal community is advised to always be vigilant to anticipate the impact of the maximum tide of sea water and the tidal phenomenon," said Fitma in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Thursday, July 4, which was confiscated by Antara.

Fitma revealed that the maximum tide of sea water has the potential to be in the Kotabaru waters at 05.00-09.00 WITA with a height of 2.5 meters. Meanwhile, areas that have the potential to be affected by tidal waves on the coasts of Kotabaru and Tanah Bumbu.

Fitma added that this phenomenon has the opportunity to have an impact on community activities and transportation at ports, such as loading and unloading goods, ship passengers, fishermen, coastal settlements, and land fisheries.

The potential for maximum tides includes the waters of eastern Central Kalimantan with a southeast-south wind speed of 5-21 knots, and a wave height of 1.25-2.5 meters.

In the Central Java Sea, he said, the wind direction is from northeast to Southeast with a speed of 2-20 knots and a wave height of 1.5 - 3.0 meters. Meanwhile in the East Java Sea, he continued, the wind direction is from the east-east with a speed of 7-26 knots and a wave height of 1.5 - 3.5 meters.

Meanwhile, in Kotabaru waters, the wind direction is from the southwest-northeast with a speed of 3-15 knots with a wave height of 1-1.5 meters.
