SEMARANG - The District Court of Semarang City, Central Java, sentenced a Malaysian citizen named Mohammad Rahim to six months in prison for entering Indonesian territory without immigration documents.

Semarang City District Court spokesman Haruno Patriadi said the verdict handed down was lighter than the prosecutor's demands for 10 months in prison.

In addition to corporal punishment, the defendant was also sentenced to a fine of Rp. 10 million.

"To declare the defendant guilty of violating Article 119 Paragraph 1 of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, June 28.

Meanwhile, Public Prosecutor Ardhika Wisnu added that the defendant would be sent back or deported to his country after serving his sentence.

"It will be handed over to the Malaysian Embassy for repatriation," he said.

Mohammad Rahim was arrested by Semarang Immigration officers after entering Indonesia illegally in January 2024.

The defendant was arrested in Demak Regency after officers received reports from residents about the whereabouts of the foreign national.

Rahim entered Indonesia by boat which was then followed by land trip to East Java for treatment purposes.

The Malaysian resident was then abandoned before being picked up by his relative to be brought back to Demak.

Rahim's whereabouts were reported to Immigration after undergoing treatment at a hospital in Demak.
