Ukraine Peace Summit, RI Affirms International Law Must Also Be Enforced In Gaza

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its views on the importance of international law enforcement in Ukraine as well as Gaza, Palestine.

"Indonesia has also conveyed that international law, including international humanitarian law and the UN Charter, must be enforced, not only in Ukraine but also in Gaza," said Spokesperson II of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Roy Soemirat, Monday, June 17.

This view was conveyed at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi appointed the Indonesian Ambassador to Switzerland, Ambassador Ngurah Swajaya, to attend as Special Envoy of the Indonesian Foreign Minister at the meeting.

Roy emphasized that the presence of Special Envoy Indonesia reflects Indonesia's strong commitment to international law enforcement & UN Charter.

Indonesia believes that disputes must be resolved through negotiations and negotiations. The main view conveyed by Indonesia is that conflict resolution must involve parties in conflict," he added.

The peace summit in Ukraine, which lasted two days in Burgenstock, Switzerland, ended on Sunday 16 June 2024 with the ratification of the final declaration.

More than 90 countries attended the negotiations, but the joint communication was supported by only 80 countries and four organizations.

A total of 16 countries and organizations, including Indonesia, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, India, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates abstain.

In his closing speech at the plenary session, Swiss President Viola Amherd said that despite their different views "successfully agreed on a common vision."

"We have set the vision in the Burgenstock Communique," Amherd said.

"We hereby send clear signals to the Ukrainian people and all those directly affected by the war: Most of the international community have a desire to bring change," he said.

He said, with the final declaration, countries had established frameworks and further discussions had to be made.
