RIAU - Governor of the Riau Islands (Kepri) Ansar Ahmad asked all parties to refrain from conflict involving residents of Rempang, Batam City with PT MEG workers.

Ansar said that currently the police are conducting an investigation to find a common thread against the triggers of clashes between the two parties.

"Don't be easily provoked by issues whose sources cannot be trusted. Leave it to the police to investigate this incident," said Governor Ansar in Tanjungpinang, Antara, Sunday, December 22.

Ansar also ensured that the Riau Islands Provincial Government together with the Batam City Government and related parties would discuss the issue of Rempang after the inauguration of the elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Batam in early 2025.

According to him, the government really prioritizes investment to improve the economy as well as create new jobs for the community, but on the other hand, they still have to prioritize the protection and welfare of the local community.

"We will find the best solution to deal with the chaos in Rempang," said Ansar.

The riot occurred in Sembulang Hulu, Rempang Tuesday (17/12) night, after residents secured PT MEG workers who lowered banners containing the rejection of the national strategic project (PSN) Eco-City installed by residents.

The incident triggered the reaction of another PT MEG worker who came to Semubulang Hulu, causing a riot that injured four local residents, and one PT MEG worker.

Currently, the clash case is being investigated by the Barelang Batam Police after receiving two police reports from residents and one report from PT MEG.
