JAKARTA - The problem of illegal parking is still in the spotlight in the public area in Jakarta. Recently, the police investigated and took action against illegal parking attendants in the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) area, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

This wild practice causes unrest among the surrounding community. That's why the police took firm action.

"For the Tanjung Priok area, we appeal to the public not to repeat similar incidents," said Tanjung Priok Police Chief Kompol Nazirwan as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, June 1.

He said a similar incident occurred three weeks ago and the police officers have dealt with the perpetrators.

"If this action repeats itself, we will take action against this illegal levy," he said.

Head of the Operational Section of the Traffic and Road Transportation Operational Control Section (Kasi Ops LLAJ) of the North Jakarta Transportation Agency, Ikhwan Purnama, said that every time there is a concert or other, some residents make a profit by providing high parking rates.

Local residents usually give parking rates of Rp. 30,000 to Rp. 50,000 per motorbike when there are activities at JIS.

He said that even though he had paid a heavy price, the residents who acted as illegal parking attendants (jukir) would not usually wait for the parking lot to finish.

"So, it is very vulnerable if JIS visitors put their motorbikes in illegal parking lots, even though they have paid a heavy price," he said.

The North Jakarta Transportation Agency (Sudinhub) has provided and socialized so that spectators of Persija's match against PSIS Semarang can park their vehicles in the parking space provided.

This is so as not to cause traffic jams and pay expensive illegal parking rates to local residents.

"We have socialized it from yesterday and directed to park the vehicle in a parking bag that has been provided in Kemayoran, Ancol and Bisma around Mitra Praja," he said.

Previously, a video circulated about a man complaining about the cost of illegal parking around JIS, North Jakarta, reaching Rp. 25,000 during the Persija Football match against PSIS Semarang, Thursday (30/5).
