Potential M 6.8 Earthquake In Lembang Fault, BMKG Bandung Survey Of Hazard Maps

BANDUNG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Class 1 Bandung Geophysics Station has conducted a survey of earthquake hazard maps caused by the Lembang Fault.

"Regarding the impact of the Lembang Fault activity, we from the Bandung BMKG have carried out a scenario of potential shock maps or shake maps of scenarios regarding the impact of existing faults in West Java," said BMKG Data and Information Coordinator Bandung Virga Librian in Bandung, Wednesday, May 8, confiscated by Antara.

Virga explained, from the results of the mapping, the earthquake caused by the Lembang Fault could have a broad impact when its strength reached a magnitude (M) of 6.8.

"It will have an impact on the Greater Bandung area, especially the MMI V-VIII intensity scale. It can even have an impact on Subang, Purwakarta, and other areas," he said.

According to him, with the existence of the Lembang Fault which stretches around Greater Bandung, mitigation must be carried out by local governments, including people living in Bandung.

"It is hoped that the community will increase preparedness, not panic, but increase their preparedness through mitigation steps before and after the earthquake," he said.

Virga added that the public must also pay attention to the availability of tools or food that can be used when an earthquake in the Lembang Fault occurs.

For example, by preparing a disaster preparedness bag that can be used at any time when a disaster strikes.

"Where the disaster preparedness bag is not only for earthquakes, but can be for other disasters that contain important books or documents, then changing clothes, ready-to-eat instant food," he said.

Meanwhile, researcher at the BRIN Center for Geological Disaster Research, Edy Hidayat, said that with the existence of the Lembang Fault, local governments should prepare infrastructure that can be used by the community to minimize the impact and casualties of the earthquake.

"This means that there is an infrastructure that might be made simple, but he is sturdy. His beds are strengthened, or his dining table is strengthened. That's all that people can do directly without any funds from the government," said Edy.
