JAKARTA - The United Nations Security Council's New Membership Admission Committee (DK PBB) failed to reach an agreement regarding the full Palestinian membership request in the international organization.

"The consensus has not been reached regarding recommendations for membership (Palestinian)," said Maltese representative who is currently leading the UN DK as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, April 12.

Following the failure of the consensus achievement, Malta will prepare a report related to the issue for UN DK members.

However, the Ambassador of Malta to the United Nations, Vanessa Total, explained that there were no problems related to fulfilling the full membership requirements of Palestine at the United Nations.

This implies two-thirds of the committee members support the Palestinian membership petition.

In 2011, Palestine applied to become a full member of the United Nations but failed to get the necessary support of UN DK members.

However, Palestinian Representative at the United Nations Riyad Mansour announced on April 2 that he had sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for their membership applications to be reconsidered.

On April 3, Guterres wrote a letter to UN DK and asked for reconsideration of the Palestinian request.

The process of accepting new UN members has begun at the Security Council. After discussion, the Security Council will refer the matter to the New Member Admission Committee.

If the committee gives a positive response, the UN DK will vote. At least nine out of 15 DK members -- on condition that no permanent member uses his veto rights -- is needed for the proposal to be valid.

If passed at the UN DK, the request would be referred to the UN General Assembly. It takes two-thirds of the majority of the 193 UN assembly members to approve the request

Since 1974, Palestine has participated in the United Nations as an observer.
