JAKARTA - Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Britain could withdraw from the European Human Rights Court (ECHR) if the move could help stem the undocumented flow of migrants.
This was conveyed by Sunak at the Never Mind The Ballots political event which was broadcast by British media, The Sun, on Wednesday, April 3. Sunak said he believed all plans regarding migrants had complied with all of his country's international obligations, including those related to ECHR.
"However, I believe that border security and efforts to ensure control of illegal migration are more important than membership of foreign courts because this is very important for our sovereignty as a country," Sunak said as quoted by Sputnik via Antara, Thursday, April 4.
The newspaper also reported that the statement has so far been the strongest warning to " Strasbourg judges who interfered ” who blocked the first deportation flight to Rwanda, Africa, in 2022.
Rwanda and Britain signed a migration agreement in 2022. People identified by the British government as undocumented migrants or asylum seekers will be deported to Rwanda for processing, granted asylum, and resettlement.
The scheme then drew criticism from human rights organizations as well as a number of politicians and officials in the UK.
The first deportation flight was supposed to take place in June 2022 but never happened due to ECHR intervention, which ruled that the action was against the law.
The British government also had to draw up a new agreement last year after the British Supreme Court ruled that the initial scheme did not guarantee asylum seeker safety.
