Minister Of Home Affairs Says DKJ Bill Continues To Maintain Major Economic Turnover In Jakarta

JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said the Draft Law on the Special Region of Jakarta (RUU DKJ) is a form of commitment to make Jakarta a world-class city, after it is no longer the nation's capital.

"The discussion of the Bill on the Province of the Special Region of Jakarta is a form of joint commitment between the government, the DPR RI, and the DPD RI to strive for Jakarta to become a world-class city while maintaining a large economic cycle," Tito said when expressing his final opinion representing the President in decision making Level II of the DKJ Bill at the DPR RI Plenary Meeting at the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, Thursday, March 28, confiscated by Antara.

The hope, he continued, is that Jakarta will be able to revive economic activity not only in the Jakarta area itself or Indonesia, but also as an important economic center in Southeast Asia, even the world.

Tito said that so far Jakarta has contributed significantly to the Indonesian economy, as data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2023 which recorded approximately 17 percent of the Indonesian economy was supported by Jakarta.

He hopes that Jakarta can continue to maintain this economic contribution after the state capital moves to the capital city of the archipelago (IKN).

"Even further improved in order to compete and be equal to world-class cities," he said.

For this reason, he continued, the DKJ Bill accommodates regulatory policy adjustments regarding speciality for Jakarta after it is no longer the nation's capital.

The DKJ Bill, he added, is also very much needed as a consequence of the birth of Law Number 21 of 2023 concerning amendments to Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the State Capital (UU IKN).

"The government and the DPR have the same vision for Jakarta that after not being the capital city, special status must be attached so that it can accelerate economic growth and will have an impact on increasing the contribution of Indonesia's gross regional domestic product," he said.

The 14th Plenary Session of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Session Period IV for Session Year 2023-2024 finally approved the decision making of Level II on the DKJ Bill to be ratified into law.

"The thing that is very monumental is the revision of the Special Capital City Law (DKI) Jakarta into the Special Regional Government Law for Jakarta," said Tito.

After the DKJ Bill was passed by the DPR through Level II Decision Making in the Plenary Meeting, President Joko Widodo still needed to issue a presidential decree (keppres) before the capital officially moved from Jakarta to IKN.
