Puan Maharani: The Legislative Election Winning Party Has The Right To Be The Chairman Of The DPR

JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani emphasized that the winning party for the 2024 Legislative Election (Pileg) is entitled to the seat of Chairman of the DPR for the next period. This is in accordance with the mandate of the Law on the MPR, DPR, DPD, and DPRD (UU MD3).

This affirmation was conveyed by Puan in response to the possibility of her re-serving as Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives for the DPR period 2024-2029.

"The winner of the legislative election who should then be entitled to become chairman of the DPR, that's what I can say," said Puan, Thursday, March 28.

PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) has again emerged as the party that won the legislative election for the third time. Based on the results of the KPU's calculations, PDIP managed to become the first-placed party in the 2024 Legislative Election with 16.72 percent of the votes.

With these results, automatically the seat of a member of the PDIP faction will also be the most in the DPR. This means that PDIP is entitled to regain the seat of chairman of the DPR in accordance with the MD3 Law.

As for the MD3 Law, the regulation is contained in Article 427 D paragraph (1) letter b which reads: The chairman of the DPR is a member of the DPR who comes from a political party that gets the first seat in the DPR.

Regarding the issue of the revision of the MD3 Law which could change the rules regarding the seat of the Chairperson of the DPR, Puan said that until now the factions in the DPR are still compact. In fact, she said that the Deputy Speaker of the DPR from the Gerindra Party who won the 2024 KPU version of the 2024 presidential election, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, admitted that there was no discussion about it from his coalition party.

"We are compact, Mr. Dasco even said we haven't. We've never heard of Mr. Dasco, right? We've never heard of anything like that," said Puan while asking directly to Dasco who was beside her.

"We appreciate that MD3 must remain a law that must be implemented and appreciated by the process in the DPR. The election process has been running and must be carried out according to the law," added the chairman of the PDIP DPP.
