Jakarta Residents Asked To Beware Of Extreme-Flood Weather Until March 8

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has asked the people of Jakarta to be aware of extreme weather in the form of increasing rainfall with heavy intensity which can cause flooding in the next week. Head of DKI Jakarta BPBD Isnawa Adji said the potential for extreme weather refers to the analysis of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). "The results of the latest analysis identified the potential for an increase in rainfall of moderate to heavy intensity accompanied by lightning / strong winds on March 01-08, 2024 in the DKI Jakarta area and its surroundings," Isnawa said in his statement, Friday, March 1. In the BMKG analysis, the potential for extreme weather in Jakarta was triggered by Madden Jullian Oscillation (MJO) activity which is currently entering phase 3 (East India Samudra). This is predicted to enter Indonesian territory starting from the west and moving east, Equatorial Rossby wave activity in parts of Indonesia, as well as the formation of slowdown, meeting, and wind bend patterns that have formed in parts of Indonesia. Yesterday, some areas in Jakarta were hit by heavy rains early in the morning on February 29. This resulted in 38 roads being flooded. The worst point of flooding was in Rawa Terate Village with a water level of 1.2 meters. Isnawa explained that the rainfall in a number of areas at that time was above average, even in the extreme category. The highest rainfall today is in the Kelapa Gading area. "In Kelapa Gading, based on BMKG data, the rainfall is 157 mm/day. There are five categories. If it's light, it's 0.5-20 mm, 20-50 moderate, 50-100 heavy, 100-150 very heavy, above 150 it's extreme. In Kelapa Gading it's very extreme," Isnawa told reporters, Wednesday, February 29.

In fact, according to Isnawa, it has been raining since this afternoon in several areas. This also resulted in the process of receding inundation for longer. Isnawa said the majority of areas affected by extreme rain were in North Jakarta, as well as parts of East Jakarta, Central Jakarta, and West Jakarta.
