Chinese Ambassador Says US Actions In Middle East Trigger New Regional Turbulence

JAKARTA - The actions of the United States in Syria and Iraq "triggered new regional turbulence," China's ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun said, condemning Washington's airstrikes in the region.

"Recently, the United States carried out airstrikes in Syria and Iraq that resulted in many casualties. This action severely violates the sovereignty, independence, and integrity of the Syrian and Iraqi territories," Ambassador Zhang said at the Security Council Open Emergency Session on US Airstrikes in Syria and Iraq., reported CNN February 6.

"Relevant military action undoubtedly triggers new regional turbulence," he added.

Ambassador Zhang further said the international community has a responsibility to reduce tensions and prevent the escalation of conflicts.

"The US said it was not trying to create conflict in the Middle East or anywhere, but instead did the opposite," said Ambassador Zhang.

"The root of the problem is the unsuccessful efforts to implement the ceasefire and stop the war in Gaza," he added.

The meeting came after Washington launched a series of airstrikes on Friday to destroy 84 targets of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria.

Uncle Sam's own country carried out the attack in response to a drone strike by Iranian-backed militants, killing three members of its military and injuring dozens more in Jordan more than a week ago.
