JAKARTA - The International Journalists Federation (IFJ) has threatened to take legal action against Israeli officials if journalists working in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, are targeted by the country's military.

In an open letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant published Saturday, IFJ said about 10 percent of journalists working in Gaza were killed during the Israel-Hamas war.

"The death rate among news hunters is so large, about three times compared to health workers, for example, that it is impossible to believe this is a coincidence," the letter said.

The IFJ letter asks Israel to issue special policies and procedures, to ensure that military personnel will protect journalists on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, the Journalists Protection Committee (CPJ) said on Sunday, about 83 journalists and media workers had been killed since the war began on October 7. Of them, 76 were Palestinians, four Israelis and three Lebanese.

Israel's military previously said it had never deliberately targeted journalists.
