Pakistan Urges US to Implement MoU with Iran to End Middle East Tensions

Pakistan urged the United States to implement the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in full and consistently to end the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, especially regarding Iran.

"The implementation of the MoU is the only way forward to address regional issues through dialogue and diplomacy," Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said when meeting with the US Embassy's Acting Chief of Mission Natalie A. Baker in Islamabad, Friday, August 14, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting, Dar also reiterated Pakistan's commitment to regional peace and security.

The two also discussed bilateral relations between Pakistan and the US, in the sidelines of discussing the current situation in the region.

Baker appreciated Pakistan's constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability while conveying his congratulations on Independence Day.

Meanwhile, Dar also held talks with the British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, on bilateral relations, high-level contacts, as well as regional and international developments.

He stressed the importance of full implementation of the MoU and reiterated Pakistan's position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable way to resolve outstanding issues.

The United States and Iran agreed to a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan in April and then signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, initiating negotiations toward a final deal.

However, the talks stalled due to disagreements over security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most strategic routes for global energy supplies and world trade.

From July 8 to 24, the US and Iran carried out military attacks on each other, with Washington attacking a number of targets inside Iran.

Tehran responded to the attack by attacking US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
