JAKARTA - To celebrate the 81st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the KJRI Houston held a series of races ranging from volleyball tournaments to independence gowes.

Hundreds of Indonesian people and diaspora in Houston and surrounding cities enliven the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence by participating in an activity titled "#IndonesiainHouston Agustusan" which was held from the end of July to early August.

The series of races began with a volleyball and table tennis tournament on July 25, 2026, followed by a badminton tournament on August 1, 2026, and an independence gowes on August 9, 2026.

Overall, the series of activities recorded at least 250 participants from the Indonesian community and diaspora in Houston and surrounding cities in the United States.

In the badminton tournament, the KJRI Houston collaborated with Rice Bowl Houston, while the independence gowes was carried out through cooperation with the Indo Houston Gowes Community.

The collaboration with various communities also strengthens the spirit of togetherness and community participation in enlivening the commemoration of Indonesian Independence Day in Houston.

The excitement of August is also felt by holding various races typical of the 17 August celebration. Children to adults also participate in a number of games, including eating crackers, balloon joget, and putting pencils in bottles.

"This series of activities reflects the strong spirit of togetherness and enthusiasm of the Indonesian people and diaspora in celebrating Indonesian Independence Day in Houston," explained the Indonesian Consul General in Houston Ourina Ritonga, launching the statement from the KJRI Houston (15/8).

"Community-based activities like this are also important to strengthen relations between Indonesian people abroad, as well as encourage a healthy and active lifestyle through sports," he added.

Through a series of sports competitions and typical activities on August 17, "#IndonesiainHouston Agustusan" became a platform to strengthen the unity of the Indonesian community and diaspora as well as to foster a spirit of sportsmanship and family in welcoming the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.
