JAKARTA - At least 21 Israeli soldiers died as a result of an attack on southern Gaza, said Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel

For several hours rescue troops worked to evacuate victims from collapsed buildings.

Laksdaani said the explosion was most likely caused by mines planted to destroy buildings. However, the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

"We are still studying and investigating the details of the incident and the cause of the explosion," he said.

The IDF has announced the deaths of 10 soldiers. Laksda Badminton said 11 other families had been notified, and the military would soon announce their names.

The attack comes as Israeli forces move deep into the western region of Khan Younis in Gaza, through aerial, sea and land bombings that include raids on a hospital and arrests of medical staff, Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al Qidra said.
