JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens (WNI) were injured as a result of a joint US and British attack on the Houthi militant position in Yemen, including Indonesian citizens who were in the area targeted by the attack.

In a statement on its website, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday's attack was carried out on the Houthi areas in Sanaa, Hudaidah, Dhammar, Sa'da Hajjah and Taiz.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Muscat, which has a working area in Yemen, continues to follow the development of the security situation in Yemen and the condition of Indonesian citizens," wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted on Friday, January 12.

"Until now, no Indonesian citizens have been reported to be victims in the intended attack," continued the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Furthermore, it was explained that 47 Indonesian citizens were domiciled in areas that were attacked by distribution in Sanaa (15 people), Hudaidah (19 people) and Dhammar (13 people).

"Based on their communication with the Indonesian citizens, they are in good condition and safe," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The Indonesian Embassy will continue to coordinate with local authorities and communicate with the Indonesian community, to monitor the condition and safety of Indonesian citizens," continued the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Based on self-report data, there are 4,866 Indonesian citizens domiciled in Yemen, the majority of whom are students in the Tarim Hadhramaut area.

The Indonesian Embassy in Muscat has prepared a contingency plan in case of further escalation. Previously, on November 2, 2023, the Indonesian Embassy in Muscat had submitted an appeal to Indonesian citizens in Yemen, especially in the Sanaa Region and its surroundings, to increase vigilance and urge them to temporarily move to safer southern Yemen.

The United States and Britain launched air and sea attacks on Houthi military targets in Yemen, in response to the group's attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

Iran-backed Houthi groups say their attack on cruise routes in the Red Sea is a form of support for Palestine and Hamas.

The attack was carried out by aircraft, ships, and submarines. Another US official said more than a dozen locations were targeted and the attack was meant to weaken Houthi's military capabilities, and not just symbolically.
