JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has detected the emergence of Tropical Cyclone 94W in the Philippine Sea which has the potential to trigger an increase in heavy rain potential in a number of Indonesian regions.
BMKG Praktirawan Henokhavita in a broadcast of weather information updates monitored from Jakarta, Monday, said that the cyclone's seeds were observed to have a maximum wind speed of 25 knots with an air pressure of 1006 hektopascal (hPa).
"The seeds of Tropical Cyclone 94W are moving west-northwest and forming a convergence area and confluence that significantly increases the potential for the growth of rain clouds," he said.
He explained that the combination of atmospheric dynamics of the cyclone seed movement system caused the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in the Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra regions.
In addition to being triggered by Cyclone 94W, an area of wind speed deceleration or convergence also formed stretching along the west coast of Aceh, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, to the western Java Sea.
Similar convergence conditions were also identified along the South Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Gorontalo, North Maluku, to the South Papua, Papua Mountains, and Central Papua regions.
For weather forecasts in major cities in western Indonesia, BMKG predicts the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Padang and Pontianak, as well as moderate rain in Bengkulu City.
Light rain is likely to rain on Medan, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bandar Lampung, Serang, Semarang, and Tanjung Selor.
The regions of Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palembang, and Banjarmasin are predicted to experience cloudy weather to heavy clouds throughout the day.
