JAKARTA - Turkey successfully conducted a test-firing of the AKYA heavyweight torpedo produced domestically with a warhead, late last month.

AKYA, developed by Turkish defense giant Roketsan, launched from the TCG Preveze submarine in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Torpedo reached its target with full accuracy, the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement, reported by the Daily Sabah on January 4.

The domestically-made new-generation Torpedo successfully hit the target from a distance of 12,000 yards and drowned it, the statement said.

AKYA's shooting test was witnessed by Naval Commander Admiral Ercument Tatlioglu, Head of the Presidential Industry of Defense Haluk Görgön and CEO of Roketsan Murat Iinci from the command center of the TCG frigate GAHKOVA.

"Today is a very important day for the Turkish Navy. We carried out the launch of the local and national torpedo AKYA very successfully, and we put it in the inventory of the Turkish Navy," Tatlioglu said in remarks after a test. shooting.

"We will soon use the Hisar national and local naval missiles, which we will use against the air targets of our ship. Likewise, our national and local nightmines will be added to our inventory in no time," he continued, given Atmaca, the anti-ship guided cruise missile developed by Roketsan, recently added to the naval inventory.

"Our ships use the fire control system, guided bullets and torpedoes we develop domestically," he added.

Meanwhile, GörgHUn said AKYA was a "very important and very necessary element," especially for submarine warfare.

"Because it is difficult to detect and has very serious damage, it is important to produce it domestically. Only five or six countries in the world can do this," he said.

Ikinci from Roketsan praised AKYA's shooting trial as a "historic day".
