Strong Winds And Heavy Rain, Mayor Of Surabaya Urges To Beware Of Extreme Weather

SURABAYA - Extreme weather with heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that often occur in Surabaya according to the predictions of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Seeing this phenomenon, the Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, appealed to residents of the City of Heroes of East Java to be aware of it.

"We appeal to all residents to be introspective and pray that the city of Surabaya will be given safety," said Mayor Eri in his statement in Surabaya, Saturday.

The appeal was conveyed by Mayor Eri after the city of Surabaya received heavy rain accompanied by strong winds on Thursday, (7/12) night which resulted in a number of areas having inundated 24 points and fallen trees at 76 points in the city of Surabaya.

"It was rain that was not as usual, what BMKG had predicted. So I asked the people of Surabaya to pray. If they saw other areas, after the rain it would be flooded, unlike Surabaya, after the rain immediately receded," he said.

Mayor Eri is worried that during the rainy season this month there will be a fallen tree. Therefore, he asked residents not to take shelter under trees when it rains with strong winds like last night.

Not only asking residents to be vigilant, he continued, the Surabaya City Environment Agency (DLH) has carried out massive tree utilization to prevent fallen trees. The tree cut was carried out by DLH since before last rainy season.

"What I'm worried about is not the water, but the fallen tree. Don't let there be victims in the city of Surabaya. So, I hope that if it rains, like yesterday, don't take shelter under trees, if it's because of nature, it can't be fought back. I can only ask for prayers for the people of Surabaya," he said.

The former Head of the Surabaya City Planning Agency (Bappeko) revealed that the Surabaya City Government is still struggling to overcome inundation or flooding until 2024.

He explained that the priority for flood management in 2024 is for improvement in the Dukuh Kupang area and its surroundings.

"So we are also making improvements. In 2023, flood management is our priority. In 2023, all of our priorities are no longer flooded. This is the priority for 2024, because the budget is large," he concluded, as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, December 9.
