Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Again This Afternoon

Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait, South Lampung Regency, Lampung, erupted again this afternoon.

According to information broadcast by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption that occurred at 16.25 WIB, Tuesday, December 5, was recorded as having a maximum amplitude of 70 millimeters and a duration of approximately 49 seconds.

The height of the eruption column of Mount Anak Krakatau, according to PVMBG, is about 1,000 meters above the peak or about 1,157 meters above sea level.

The column of ash coming out of the volcano was reported to be thick and gray, heading northwest.

Mount Anak Krakatau on Tuesday at 12:56 WIB was also reported to have experienced an eruption with an eruption column height of approximately 1,000 meters above the peak or about 1,157 meters above sea level.

The eruption recorded on the seismograph has a maximum amplitude of 60 mm and a duration of 120 seconds caused the gray to black ash column with thick intensity to the northwest.

In the early hours of Tuesday, at 04.38 WIB, Mount Anak Krakatau was reported to have erupted and ejected thick black ash to the northwest.

Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post in Hargopancuran, South Lampung, Andi Suardi, said the residential area closest to Mount Anak Krakatau is on Sebesi Island.

Andi appealed to residents and fishermen not to approach the area within a radius of five kilometers from the active crater of Mount Anak Krakatau.

"Currently Mount Anak Krakatau is at Level III, on standby," he said as quoted by ANTARA.

Acting Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of South Lampung Regency, Aflah Efendi, has appealed to residents living in coastal areas and Sebesi Island to increase preparedness to face the impact of the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

According to him, until now there have been no reports regarding the impact of the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on residential areas in the surrounding area.
