JAKARTA - The puzzle surrounding the prehistoric monument, Stonehenge, which is one of the British landmarks and is still shrouded in mystery, is slowly starting to be answered.

Stonehenge which is believed to have originated from the prehistoric age attracts tourists from various parts of the world to come. The purpose of this historical monument is not yet known, including the spiritual connection to the past.

However, the discoveries that researchers are slowly making are believed to answer the riddle of this prehistoric monument. Such as the findings of a team of archaeologists in 2015, which found several stones originating from a quarry in Preseli Hills, the west coast of Wales which is more than 250 kilometers from the current location of Stonehenge.

Most recently, researchers at University College, London say they believe some of the stones originally formed an older monument in Wales. They have found a significant relationship between Stonehenge and sites in Wales.

Archaeologists believe they have discovered the origins of the prehistoric monument to Stonehenge after they discovered the remains of an ancient stone circle in Wales that may have been dismantled and rebuilt hundreds of years later in England.

In the research published in the Antiquity Journal, the researchers found several linkages.

The Welsh circle is 110 meters in diameter, the same as the trench that encloses Stonehenge, and the two align at sunrise in midsummer. At least one of the bluestones at Stonehenge matches one of the holes found in the Welsh circle.

University of College London's  Archeology Professor, Parker Pearson, who led the investigation, suspected the stones may have been removed when people living in Wales migrated, took their monument with them, and re-erected it at Stonehenge.

"It's as if they just disappeared. Maybe most of the people migrated, taking their stones, their ancestral identities, with them," Pearson told the BBC as reported by Reuters.

Previously, Stonehenge researchers also guessed that this monument was first built in Wales. However, it has never been known where their real location is. In fact, historical mythology that has developed for a long time also calls Stonehenge from a distant land.
