JAKARTA - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) targets as many as 1 million honorary teachers to become teachers of state civil servants of government with a work agreement (ASN PPPK) by the end of 2024.

"We have calculated the need for teachers in 2020, there are 1 million teachers and it is hoped that by 2024 1 million teachers (honorary) can be raised (to become ASN PPPK teachers)," said Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel of the Ministry of Education and Culture Nunuk Suryani as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, November 9.

Nunuk said this because the Ministry of Education and Culture wants all groups to study and learn in public schools to be monitored by ASN teachers so that there will be no more honorary teachers.

He explained that the honorary teachers who have been appointed as PPPK ASN teachers since 2021 are 544 thousand people and this year the PPPK ASN teacher selection process is underway so that later there will be an additional 296 thousand teachers.

"So if we add more than 800 thousand honorary teachers to become PPPK ASN (until the end of 2023)," said Nunuk.

The Ministry of Education and Culture wants to make the teaching profession honorable, dignified and proud so that it seeks to appoint honorary teachers to become PPPK ASNs.

To make this happen, the Ministry of Education and Culture made several efforts such as coordination and synergy with various other ministries/agencies (K/L) that were included in the national selection committee (panselnas).

Among these coordinations are to formulate the policy of selecting PPPK ASN teachers because every year there must be a change in the rules.

In addition, the national committee also coordinates with the regional government (Pemda) because they propose formations while the Ministry of Education and Culture is tasked with calculating its needs.

"So that the proposal is in line with the needs, we coordinate with the local government to socialize policies and encourage them to propose formations according to the needs we have calculated," he said.

Kemendikbudristek and the National Panselnas also provide supporting data for the Indonesian Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) so that the salary budget for PPPK ASN is allocated.

Regional Secretary of East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Umbu Ngadu Ndamu said, for this year his area received 532 formations but only 264 honorary teachers who passed the administrative selection stage.

"We are trying our best to get them to qualify for the next stages," he said.
