PURBALINGGA - Karangmoncol Police have arrested a recidivist in a food theft case. The perpetrator was arrested while trying to steal at Runjang Market, Tunjungmuli Village, Purbalingga Regency, Central Java (Central Java).

Karangmoncol Police Chief Inspector Satu Amirudin said the perpetrator who also worked as a driver had the initials AN (44), a resident of Sered Village, Madukara District, Banjarnegara Regency.

"He was arrested while trying to act at one of the Pasar Runjang kiosks, Tunjungmuli Village, Karangmoncol District, on Monday (October 2), at around 16.00 WIB," he said during a press conference at the Purbalingga Resort Police Headquarters, Friday, October 6, which was confiscated by Antara.

According to him, the arrest began with surveillance camera footage (CCTV) installed at Runjang Market recording the perpetrator's action on May 24, 2023, at around 13.00 WIB.

In the CCTV footage, he said, the perpetrator was found to have committed theft by breaking the lock of the kiosk in the closed market and then taking away garlic, shallots, and rice up to tens of kilograms.

From the results of the investigation, he continued, officers were aware of the characteristics of the perpetrator and the motorcycle used to carry out the theft.

Furthermore, Amirudin said when the perpetrator was about to commit theft again around Runjang Market on Monday, October 2, market security officers learned of the movements of the perpetrators who had the characteristics as in the CCTV footage of the theft case that occurred in May.

"Furthermore, market security officers informed residents and the police to secure the perpetrators," he said.

During the arrest, he continued, officers secured a number of evidences from the perpetrators, including a motorcycle asc key, a 3 meter long black rubber rope, a burlap sack, a lock key, and a motorcycle used for action.

During the examination, he said, the perpetrator admitted that he had committed theft at the Pasar Runjang kiosk in May 2023 and the money obtained from selling the stolen goods was used for various purposes.

According to him, since the theft was carried out in May, the perpetrator admitted to staying in Banjarnegara until he was finally arrested when he was about to repeat his actions.

"From the results of the examination, the perpetrator is known to be a recidivist who was convicted of a similar theft case in the Banyumas and Temanggung regencies. The person concerned will only be released from prison in 2022," he said.

The police chief said that based on the facts, his party had named AN as a suspect and was charged with Article 363 Paragraph (1) to 5e of the Criminal Code, subsidiary to Article 362 of the Criminal Code with a threat of 7 years in prison.
