JAKARTA - Mercedes Benz withdrew or recalled its electric car products in China, due to the risk of a fire in batteries.

Quoting from the Carnewschina page, Saturday, March 29, the German luxury car manufacturer joint venture in China Beijing Benz announced a total recall of 12,308 units for EQA and EQB models.

From data shared by the State Administration for China's Market Regulation or SAMR, the model affected by the recall is production between April 1, 2021, and October 31, 2023.

"Some of the vehicles included in this recall have reduced battery reliability due to fluctuations in the high-voltage battery production process," the announcement read.

In addition, software control of existing battery management systems can also cause these cells to bear excessive burdens. This factor can increase the risk of short circuits in cells.

Worse, when the problem occurs (a short circuit in battery cells) can cause a vehicle fire, and of course it can pose a safety hazard to users, as well as to the surroundings.

Responding to the problems above, Mercedes Benz will upgrade the affected vehicle battery management system software, through a network of dealers that have spread to eliminate safety hazards.

Prior to the recall, Mercedes Benz advised users to set limits on charging electric vehicles so as not to exceed 80 percent.

As is known, this is the second time this luxury brand has made a EQ series recall in China. Previously, on June 21, 2024 Mercedes Benz also recalled 2,380 EQ series units including EQS SUVs and EQE SUVs due to the risk of vehicles losing power while driving.
