JAKARTA - The Spanish government has asked the European Union for help in dealing with forest fires that have hit the entire country since the beginning of July.
At the request of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated, with Spain requesting at least four aircraft to put out forest fires, reported the Spanish international news agency, EFE.
Greece also agreed to send two planes to Spain through the mechanism.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the situation in his country as quite dramatic.
"We are facing a sad situation; not only in various provinces in Spain, but also in neighboring countries," Sanchez wrote on the X platform, as reported by Sputnik, Friday, July 24.
Sanchez had convened a State Coordination Committee for Emergency Situations on Friday to discuss the development of forest fires.
A state of emergency has been declared in the autonomous regions of Madrid and Avila Province due to the widespread forest fires. More than 10,000 people have been evacuated throughout the Madrid region due to forest fires.
In the autonomous region of Castile and Leon, nine fire points are still burning, four of which are quite serious. In Avila Province, the fire has forced more than 1,500 people to be evacuated, making it the biggest concern.
