Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Resigns for Health Reasons

JAKARTA - The President of Bangladesh Mohammed Shahabuddin announced his resignation on health grounds, as reported by the Daily Star newspaper.

"I suffer from various health complications," President Shahabuddin said, as quoted by the newspaper, as reported by Sputnik.

Through the letter, the 76-year-old man admitted that he had recently been diagnosed with a condition called autonomic neuropathy, which sometimes made him lose consciousness.

"Because of the development of this disease and which resulted in mental and physical disability, I am no longer able to carry out the important constitutional responsibilities of the presidency. I need long-term medical treatment," he wrote.

Shahabuddin resigned as president long before his term ended in April 2028.

Based on the constitution, the parliament speaker will serve as the interim president, according to the Bangladesh newspaper Dhaka Tribune.
