BALIKPAPAN - The Balikpapan Station Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents of East Kalimantan (Kaltim) to be aware of high tides accompanied by significant waves. "If it's just a high tide, this has been understood by fishermen and coastal residents, but if it's accompanied by a significant wave, this is what needs vigilance," said Head of BMKG Class I Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Balikpapan Kukuh Rubidiyanto in Balikpapan, Antara, Friday, September 22. Based on the water tide forecast in East Kalimantan for the period 21-30 September 2023, a number of coastal areas of East Kalimantan experienced high tides, including in the waters of the Balikpapan area. In this period, the highest tide is predicted to occur on September 30, 2023 with a height of 2.7 meters at 19.00 WITA, while the lowest tide is only 0.2 meters high on September 30 at 12.00, 13.00, and 24.00 WITA. The significant waves that accompany the tide last for a long time, namely during the tide it lasts about five hours, so residents are advised to be vigilant or wait for the tide and the waves to stop, then continue work. The Balikpapan waters are also included in Penajam Paser Utara (PPU) Regency, while in PPU there are quite a lot of people who have shrimp ponds, crabs and other fish ponds, so they are advised to be vigilant so that their ponds are maintained. "The high sea wave in Balikpapan waters near the coast is between 1.25 meters to 2 meters, slightly to the middle, or about 10-15 km from the coast with a wave height of 1.25 - 1.5 meters. Then in the southern part of Balikpapan Bay it is 1.5 meters high, and east of Samarinda with waves as high as 2 meters," he said. He continued, for the ups and downs at Muara Sungai Berau, the highest tide is also predicted to occur on September 30 with a height of 2.7 meters at 21.00 WITA, also accompanied by significant waves lasting for a long time.

"Meanwhile, the lowest tide in Berau was 0.1 meters high on September 30 at 02.00 and 03.00 WITA. Currently, it is still safe because tides are normal, but vigilance must be increased by September 30, because tides accompanied by significant waves also have the potential to rise water to more plains," said Kukuh.
