JAKARTA - The DPR RI is scheduled to ratify the approval of the Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier grant from the Italian Government in a plenary meeting at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 21. The approval had previously been agreed by the government together with the DPR Commission I.
Chairman of Commission I of the DPR, Utut Adianto, said all eight factions in Commission I agreed to the process of granting the aircraft carrier worth around Rp. 1.1 trillion. However, all factions noted that the government should prepare financing for the operation and maintenance of the ship after it was officially accepted by Indonesia.
"Commission I approved, where all factions provided notes on how to finance its operations in the future," said Utut at the DPR/MPR Complex, Senayan, Monday, July 20.
According to Utut, even though the ship was obtained through a grant scheme, the government still had to allocate a budget for the repair and maintenance process. However, he assessed that the grant still provided strategic benefits because the Indonesian Navy could study the technology and systems owned by the ship.
"Why are you given an old ship? Well, if the ship is only 1-2 years old, who would give it for free? Right. The point is, we are very grateful to the Italian government," he said.
He explained that after arriving in Indonesia, the Giuseppe Garibaldi ship will undergo repair and renaming before being operated by the Indonesian Navy.
According to the plan, the ship will be stationed in the waters of Sumatra to support border security and helicopter operations, not for open war missions.
"What is clear, this ship is certainly not for an open war mission, if it is for war it is impossible to share it just like that," said Utut.
"This ship may be more functional for guarding the outer border area, as well as supporting helicopter landing operations at certain moments," he continued.
Giuseppe Garibaldi will be the first aircraft carrier owned by Indonesia. The ship is targeted to arrive before the 81st anniversary of the TNI on October 5, 2026. The TNI has also prepared the escort personnel, while the Lampung TNI AL Base (Lanal) has been prepared as the location for the ship to land.
