Regarding The Constitutional Court's Decision, PDIP Respects But Considers The Election System To Be Better Closed

The PDI-P (PDIP) appreciates the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) which rejected the lawsuit for changing the Election system today, Thursday, June 15. PDIP from the start believes that the judge who decides on this judicial review will make the best decision.

"On the decision of the Constitutional Court, it was determined that the judicial review of the election system was an open proportion, so from the PDI-P we first respected the decision from the Constitutional Court," PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto told reporters through an online press conference, Thursday, June 15.

Even though they respect PDIP, they still believe that a closed system is better implemented in the 2024 General Election. In contrast to being open, this system requires voters to vote on the party's picture instead of the name of the legislative candidate.

"In order for the duties of council members to be carried out as well as possible in the view of the PDI-P, of course, to produce council members who have qualifications in bringing Indonesia forward in all aspects of life, council members must be prepared as well as possible and that is through a closed proportional system," explained Hasto.

But according to the Constitutional Court's decision, they are still ready if the electoral system remains open. In fact, Hasto claims that his party has prepared legislative candidates along with their serial numbers.

"For us, including the DPR RI, all of them have considered serial numbers from the district/city, provincial and national levels," he said.

"So that the Constitutional Court's decision does not change the stages that have been followed by PDIP because we register legislative candidates at all levels to continue using an open list proportional election system," he continued.

Previously, the Constitutional Court decided that the electoral system in the plenary session remained proportional. The verdict hearing was read out directly by Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Anwar Usman.

"The Court has the authority to try the a quo application.... The petition of the petitioners is not legally justified in its entirety,"

The lawsuit for judicial review of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections is related to an open to closed proportional system at the Constitutional Court with case registration number 114/PUU-XX/2022 on November 14, 2022.

The six people, namely Demas Brian Wicaksono (Pemohon I), Yuwono Pintadi (Pemohon II), Fahrurrozi (Pemohon III), Ibnu Rachman Jaya (Permohon IV), Riyanto (Pemohon V), and Nono Marijono (Pemohon VI).

The PDIP from the start became the only party in parliament to support a closed proportional system. Meanwhile, the Gerindra Party, the NasDem Party, the National Awakening Party (PKB), the United Development Party (PPP), the National Mandate Party (PAN), and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) rejected it.
