A total of 122 residents of South Central Timor Regency (TTS) became victims of a rabies dog bite which resulted in one death per day.

Head of Protocol and Communication Section for the Regional Secretariat of North Central Timor Regency (TTU), Johanes Amsikan, asked residents who are neighbors to TTS Regency to be aware of the transmission of rabies.

"We ask residents of TTU Regency to be more alert to the transmission of rabies. Do not consume dog meat that has been infected with rabies or show rabies symptoms," he said when contacted from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Thursday, June 8, as reported by Antara.

Johanes said that the Regent of TTU Juandi Regency, David, had issued an appeal to the people of TTU in anticipating the transmission of rabies, such as not allowing residents to bring in dog, cat and ape animals from outside TTU Regency, including from TTS.

The TTU Regency Government also hopes that people will bind or ground dogs, cats and monkeys to minimize the transmission of rabies.

"For the sake of security, comfort and safety together so that residents' pet dogs are tied up, so they don't roam around," said Johanes.

The TTU Regency Government also hopes that residents will find dog, cat and ape animals with signs such as saliva coming out of their mouths and fear of light, water and noise and look like they like to be alone to immediately report them to the TTU Regency Livestock Service.

Johanes said the source of rabies transmission was through bite, scratch and saliva from a dog that had been infected with rabies.

"If you are attacked by a bite or scratch of a dog, cat, and monkey, immediately wash the bite or scratch marks with running water using detergents or soap for 15 minutes and then dried and detected with alcohol or betdine and must immediately go to the Puskesmas to get medical treatment," he concluded.
