BRIN Focuses on Developing Nuclear Technology to AI

Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency or BRIN continues to strive to strengthen research and innovation in strategic technology, ranging from nuclear technology to artificial intelligence (AI), as an effort to encourage sustainable economic growth.

This was conveyed by BRIN Head Arif Satria at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Thursday, August 6.

According to him, the experience of various countries shows a positive correlation between innovation capacity, measured through the Global Innovation Index (GII), and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita.

In 2025, the top 10 GII rankings are dominated by developed countries with high per capita income, such as Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and South Korea. Therefore, Arif said BRIN has mapped a number of technology development focuses that are expected to be able to drive economic growth in the long term.

First, BRIN will focus on developing semiconductor technology so that Indonesia is no longer dependent on foreign chips. Second, BRIN will also make AI one of the research priorities to increase national productivity.

Regarding AI technology, Arif added that BRIN has integrated the technology in the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) Program. One of the innovations that have been developed is Food Guard, a smart device that is installed on a food container (can) to maintain food quality during the distribution process.

"BRIN, he continued, has also developed various innovations that cover the entire MBG ecosystem chain, from the provision of food materials to AI-based monitoring systems.

Third, BRIN will also focus on developing genomic technology so that Indonesia is able to produce seeds, drugs, and bio-industries independently. Fourth, BRIN will develop quantum technology to support future security and computing.

In addition, he explained that BRIN also focuses on the development of two other technological fields, namely nuclear and space technology, as a lever for sovereignty in the fields of energy, health, food, and regional surveillance.

Especially in the field of nuclear technology, Arif said BRIN would focus on building a holistic national nuclear ecosystem so that Indonesia has independence when it starts to use Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN).
